Terms of Service

Effective 14 October 2026

The agreement between you and MantaInk for using the MantaInk website and app. We have tried to write it the way we would explain it across a table.

Contents

In short

  1. Your writing is yours. We use it only to run MantaInk for you and the people you share it with.
  2. AI is optional. What it writes for you is yours to use, but check it before you rely on it.
  3. Fiction can go to dark places. Harming real people, taking other people’s work or breaking the law cannot.
  4. MantaInk is free today and still growing, so keep an export of anything you can’t afford to lose.
  5. You can leave whenever you like and take your work with you.

A summary to help you read what follows. The full text below is what applies.

These terms

MantaInk (“MantaInk”, “we”, “us”) is a writing room for game stories and the worlds behind them. These terms cover your use of the MantaInk website, app and everything they offer (the “service”).

By creating an account or using MantaInk you agree to these terms. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with your information and forms part of them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use MantaInk.

Who can use MantaInk

You must be at least 13 years old. If the law where you live sets a higher age for using a service like this on your own, that age applies to you.

If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, you need a parent or guardian’s permission, and they accept these terms for you.

You can’t use MantaInk if we have previously closed your account for breaking these terms, or if the law prevents you from using it. If you use MantaInk for an organisation, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms on its behalf.

Your account

Give accurate details when you sign up, and keep your email address current so you can receive sign-in codes. An account is for one person.

Keep your password and the accounts you sign in with (Google or GitHub) secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has got in, change your password and tell us at once.

Choose a username that doesn’t pretend to be someone else or mislead people. We may change or reclaim a username that impersonates a person or organisation, or breaks these terms.

Signing in with Google or GitHub is also covered by their own terms.

Your work stays yours

Everything you write or upload, including stories, worlds, characters, images, comics, plans and your conversations with Manta, is your content. You keep every right you have in it. We don’t claim ownership of any of it.

To run MantaInk we need your permission to handle that content. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, process and display your content, only to provide the service to you and to the people you choose to share it with. In practice that means:

  • saving it, keeping its version history, and showing it back to you and your collaborators;
  • searching it and keeping your world’s memory up to date;
  • sending the parts that are needed to the AI model you are using, when AI is on;
  • making backups;
  • showing it to other people when you make a project public or unlisted.

This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies held in backups for a limited time and for contributions to projects other people own (see Working with others).

We don’t sell your content, and we don’t use it to train AI models.

You confirm that you own what you add to MantaInk, or have permission to use it, and that it doesn’t break these terms.

Writing with AI

AI is optional. With AI turned off under Account › AI, nothing you write is sent to an AI model, not even in the background. Everything else still works.

With AI on, the text a request needs is sent to the company behind the model in use, who processes it under their own terms. The Privacy Policy explains this in detail.

Between you and us, what Manta and the other agents write for you is yours to use, as far as the law allows. AI output can be wrong, inconsistent with your canon, or similar to text other people receive. Read it before you rely on it, and you are responsible for what you choose to keep and publish.

If you add your own API key for an AI provider, calls made with it are billed to you by that provider under your agreement with them. We store the key encrypted and use it only for your requests.

Working with others and publishing

Projects are private until you share them. A project owner can invite people as editors, who can write, or as viewers, who can only read. Owners decide who stays on a project.

What you add to a project someone else owns becomes part of that project. It stays there after you leave the project or delete your account, credited to you or, once your account is gone, to “Deleted account”. By contributing, you allow the project’s owner and members to keep using, changing, exporting and publishing it as part of the project.

A project made unlisted can be read by anyone signed in to MantaInk who has its link. A public project is also listed on its owner’s profile and in search. Only the owner can change this.

Fair use of MantaInk

Fiction can go to dark places: stories about crime, war, cruelty or horror are welcome here. What isn’t welcome is using MantaInk to harm real people or break the law. You agree not to use MantaInk to:

  • create, upload or share sexual content involving minors, in any form. We remove it, close the account and report it to the authorities;
  • harass, threaten or bully real people, publish their private information, or encourage violence against them;
  • share content you don’t have the right to use, or that infringes someone else’s copyright, trademark or privacy;
  • pretend to be another person or organisation;
  • spread malware, phishing or spam;
  • get into accounts or projects that aren’t yours, test or break our security, or get around usage limits, credits or a suspension;
  • overload the service, or scrape it or access it automatically beyond normal use of the app;
  • break the usage policies of the AI provider whose model you are using.

If something on MantaInk breaks these rules, use Report inside the app or write to hello@mantaink.com. We may remove content, limit features or suspend accounts that break them.

Plans, credits and limits

MantaInk is free to use today. Each plan comes with AI credits that refill on the schedule shown in the app, along with limits on some features. Calls made with your own API keys don’t use credits.

We may change plans, credits and limits. We will tell you before a change that reduces what your plan includes takes effect.

We don’t take payments today. If we add paid plans, we will show the price and any extra terms before you pay, and nothing will be charged without your agreement.

Feedback

We love hearing ideas. If you send feedback or suggestions, we may use them to improve MantaInk without owing you anything for them. Sending feedback doesn’t change who owns your writing.

The service can change

MantaInk is young and changes often. We may add, change or remove features, sometimes without notice when a fix can’t wait.

We work hard to keep MantaInk available and your work safe, but we can’t promise it will never be interrupted or lose data. Keep your own copies of work that matters, for example a full backup from a project’s Export page.

Leaving, suspension and ending

You can stop using MantaInk at any time and delete your account yourself under Account. Deleting it removes your profile and private data and deletes the projects you alone own. The Privacy Policy lists what is kept.

We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect other people or the service. When it is reasonable and safe to, we will tell you why and give you a chance to export your work first.

The parts of these terms that by their nature should outlast your account, such as the licence for contributions to shared projects, the disclaimers and the limits on liability, continue after it ends.

Disclaimers

MantaInk is provided “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise that AI output is accurate, original or suitable for any purpose.

Limits on liability

As far as the law allows, MantaInk is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the service.

Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 50 US dollars.

If someone brings a claim against us because of content you added or because you broke these terms or the law, you agree to cover the reasonable losses and costs that result, as far as the law allows.

Some places don’t allow these limits. Where that is so, they apply only as far as the law permits. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law says cannot be limited.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as MantaInk grows. For changes that matter, we will tell you in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect, unless the change is required by law or fixes a safety problem. The date at the top of this page shows the current version.

If you keep using MantaInk after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms. If you don’t accept them, you can export your work and delete your account.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the place where MantaInk is operated, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you use MantaInk as a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in its courts.

Before going to court, please write to us. Most problems can be fixed by talking.

If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we haven’t given it up. You may not transfer these terms to someone else; we may transfer them to whoever runs MantaInk after us. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the service.
